Important stuff

Our Taka Team are passionate about making your stay memorable for all the right reasons. We want you to have a fabulous time, and we’ll work hard to ensure everything is just as it should be so you’re comfortable & happy. And to help you get started, we’ve outlined a few things you need to be aware of before you get here.

Alcohol – we’re licensed to sell beer, wine & our Takarakka Tokay to Takarakka guests. Cheers.

Camp fires – large communal camp fire pits, seating and wood are provided for your use, as individual campfires on sites are not permitted.

Camp kitchens – our camp kitchens include BBQs, gas cooktops, kitchen benches and sinks, kettle urns and seating. Ice is available for sale however for health and safety we don’t provide fridges in the camp kitchens.

Drive-through sites – available on request.

Dump point – we do have a dump point, however due to our remote location, we ask that you consider using the public dump points at Rolleston, Injune, Springsure, Emerald and Roma on your way in or out and maybe using our modern, clean amenities while you’re here. Of course, if you’re ‘caught short’ we’re more than happy to help. Please note – Takarakka operates a fully environmental biological waste treatment system and dumping of chemical toilet waste is prohibited into our system.

Fridges – our accommodation has fridges, however due to health reasons, there are no fridges in our camp kitchens. We do sell ice at our general store.

Fruit & veg – unfortunately we don’t sell fruit and veg here, so please come stocked up.

Fuel – there is no fuel at Carnarvon Gorge. Nearest towns are Rolleston (100km north) and Injune (150km south). We recommend you fill up or top up at either if these places before you get here.

Gas refills – available at our general store.

General store – our well-stocked general store is open daily. Check out what’s available here.

Generators – are not permitted at Takarakka. We do have powered sites available.

Guided tours – advanced bookings are essential to ensure you don’t miss out once you arrive. See our Adventure page for information on a great range of tours, activities and things to see and do.

Hire – kitchen sets including plates, bowls, cups and cutlery, chopping board, knives, utensils and cooking pots are available for hire @ $10 per person.

Ice – is for sale at our general store.

Laundry – probably one of the nicest places to be if you have to do laundry! Washing machines, clothesline & dryer provided. Tokens available at reception.

Maps – at check-in we’ll provide you with a map of Takarakka & info on the national park walks.

Meal options – pre-made sandwiches & wraps are available every day all year round. Roast dinners are available from April through to September on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (advanced bookings essential) and our general store stocks a basic range of groceries and local meats for your convenience. Check out our Feast & fun page for the full low-down.

Pets – domestic animals are not allowed at Takarakka as we’re in the national park. Consider giving your fur-babies and feathered friends a ‘holiday’ while you’re here – there’s pet-boarding available in the neighbouring towns of Rolleston, Injune, Springsure, Emerald & Roma, and we’re happy to provide you with their contact numbers.

Phone – there’s no mobile coverage out here, so no mobile calls or text messaging. We do have a public pay phone that uses coins if you really need to get in touch. Otherwise, enjoy being ‘unplugged’.

Road conditions – the road in is classified as an all-vehicle road suitable for all cars and caravans, and by mid-2017 it will be bitumen the whole 40km’s to Takarakka! Simply look out for cattle & wildlife and drive to the conditions.

Showers – free hot showers & excellent modern bathroom facilities.

Stay – we recommend a 4-6 night stay to truly experience Carnarvon Gorge.

TV – if you have a satellite dish (and a TV!), then you should be good to go.

Visitor information – to ensure your Carnarvon Gorge holiday experience best suits your time, interest and physical ability, we offer daily info talks once you’ve settled in.

Water – free potable water is available on all powered sites and in each camp kitchen.

Weather – Carnarvon Range weather can vary significantly from the surrounding areas. It may be raining elsewhere and completely dry here! Use the Rolleston weather as a guide. If there’s been heavy rain in the local area and you’re unsure about the drive in, give us a call on 07 4964 4535 for an update on conditions.

Wi-Fi – free Wi-Fi is available for Takarakka guests, plus there’s paid Roaming Wi-Fi if you’re in need of a speedier connection.

That’s it for now. Still unsure? Please contact us and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.
